A Wall / 壁

Ms. Angela Dorothea Merkel, Federal Chancellor of Germany, gave a speech at the graduation ceremony of Harvard University, U.S.A. She insisted that if we destroy the wall in our hearts and minds, the enemies will become friends. All the audiences said to give her a standing ovation.

ドイツのメルケル首相がアメリカのハーバード大学の卒業式でスピーチを行いました。その中で彼女は、もし、私たちの心の中の壁を壊せば、敵が友になる、と述べました。学生たちは拍手喝采だったそうです。

Recently, the policy of “My country is the first.” is prevailing in the world.  The more walls are built, the more enemies will be on the rise.

最近は「自国第一主義」が世界を席巻しつつあります。壁が作られれば作られるほど、より多くの敵が生まれるでしょう。

In Germany, under the leadership of Ms. Merkel, more than one million Syrian refugees have been admitted at its peak time.  Germany destroyed the wall between the war-torn country and own conutry.

ドイツでは、メルケル首相のリーダーシップの元、最大時、100万人以上のシリア難民を受け入れました。ドイツは戦争で引き裂かれた国と自国の間の壁を壊したのです。

It’s a contrast between “My country is the first” and “Coexistence among different nations.”

「自国第一主義」と「諸国協調主義」の対比です。

As she destroyed the wall, her words possess real power, I believe.

現実に壁を壊したからこそ、彼女の言葉は真の力を持っているのだと思います。

As long as we have enemies, we will not be able to realize the authentic coexistence of humanity.

敵を持つ限り、私たちは人類の真の共生を実現することはできないのです。

How can we dismantle or destroy the wall?  Can religion contribute to this work?  It’s the most critical question, I think.

いかにしたら私たちは壁を壊すことができるのでしょうか？宗教はそのことに貢献できるでしょうか？これこそが最も大切な問いであると思います。
