Beyond all borders / すべての隔たりを超えて

From July 4th till 9th, I attended GEN FEST, a gathering of youth members of Focolare which is a Catholic lay movement. It was the 11th gathering in 2018 in Manila of the Philippines. The title of this gathering is “Beyond all Borders.”

7月4日より9日まで、私はカトリックの在家運動体であるフォコラーレ運動のGEN FESTと呼ばれる青年たちの集いに参加しました。今年で11回目を迎えた集いはフィリピンのマニラで開催されました。集いのテーマは「すべての隔たりを超えて」でした。

It intends to highlight the boundaries that need to be overcome at personal and social levels. This eleventh gathering aims to inspire participants to feel capable of building a united world. It requires everyone to go beyond all borders and breathe, love, work and live with concern for everyone. In this context, GEN FEST provided the participants with a golden opportunity of sincerely looking at such ways of living through, music, dances, sharing faith experience and workshops, etc.

このテーマは個人そして社会レベルで乗り越えていかなければならない隔たり、境界、限界に焦点を当てたものです。特に第11回目の集いは、参加者が一致した世界を構築することができると思うようになることに主眼を置いたものです。そのためにはあらゆる隔たり、境界、限界を乗り越えて、すべての人に思いを寄せ、愛し、働き、生きることが求められるのです。GEN FESTは音楽やダンス、信仰体験の分かち合い、ワークショップ等を通し、その生き方を真摯に見つめる機会となりました。

About 6,000 Focolare youths from around the world gathered. There were far over 100 participants from Japan, of which nearly 80 were young leaders of Rissho Kosei-kai, a friend organization of Focolare and one of the core member groups of ACRP.

世界各国らか6,000名のフォコラーレ青年が集まりました。日本からは100名をはるかに超える参加があり、うち80名近くはフォコラーレ運動の友人であり、ACRPのメンバーグループでもある立正佼成会の青年リーダーたちでした。

The whole programs were full of energy and passion of young people of Catholic and other faiths. Singing, dancing together and sharing the joy for, and making determination and devotion to build a united world through love, compassion, respect, and trust.

すべてのプログラムはカトリックと他宗教の青年たちのエネルギーと情熱に満ち満ちていました。愛、慈悲、尊重、信頼によって一致した世界を築きあげるために共に歌い、踊り、喜びを分かち合い、決意と挺身を誓い合ったのです。

The whole venue was swaying with the breath of joy as if it were a huge creature. What was deeply rooted in the whole GEN FEST is the conviction that we can build, or must build a united world which God wishes by believing in God’s love, God’s compassion, and by loving all neighbors. I cannot forget the scene everyone was singing together that we can make changes again and again.

会場全体がまるで大きな生き物のように歓喜の息吹で揺れ動いていました。そこに通底していたものは神の愛、慈悲を信じ、すべての隣人を愛することによって必ず神が望む一致した世界を築くことができる、築いていかなければならないという思いだったような気がします。何度も何度も自分たちは世界を変えることができる、と歌っていた光景が忘れられません。

Compassion is Com + passion. Com means togetherness, combination or mass. So, compassion is a mass of passion.  Many young people of faith could strengthen their genuine compassion of building a united world through participating in GEN FEST by overcoming all borders, which mean boundary, border and limit not only in the realm of society but also in the realm of oneself.

慈悲という意味のcompassionは、comとpassionの組み合わせです。Comは一緒、組合せ、塊という意味です。ですからcompassionは情熱の塊という意味です。信仰を持つ多くの若者たちが、GEN FESTへの参加を通して、社会を分ける隔たり、境界、限界のみでなく、自分自身の中にある隔たり、境界、限界というものを乗り越えながら一致した世界を築いていこうという真の慈悲心を深めることができました。

Many youth participants expressed that they could take a small step toward overcoming a limit which they set up in themselves. Although I am not youth, I felt something changed in myself radically after attending this program. It might be a renewal of my compassion for building a convivial world with so many young friends, who are full of compassion in the world, by seriously going beyond all borders.

多くの若者たちが、彼ら自身が自分の内に設定した限界を乗り越えるささやかな一歩を体験できたと語りました。私自身は若者ではありませんが、このプログラムに参加した自分の中で何か大きな変容が起こったと感じました。たぶん世界中の慈悲心にあふれた多くの若者たちと一緒に共生世界を築き上げていくための私自身のコンパッション、慈悲心の新生だったのかもしれません。すべてのボーダーを本気で乗り越えながら。

Ages may not affect the compassion of people who are pursuing peace. By saying myself this idea, it was an encounter that I could renew my determination to live the rest of my life with full of passion.

平和を希求する人の慈悲に年齢は何の影響も与えない、この思いを自分に言い聞かせながら、これからも本気で生きていきたい、そんな決意を新たにした出会いでした。
