Caring for Our Common Future / 慈しみの実践－（私たちの）共通の未来のために

The 10th World Assembly of Religions for Peace will be held in Lindau of Germany in coming August. The main theme of the WA is “Caring for Our Common Future.”

第10回の世界宗教者平和会議が本年8月にドイツのリンダウで開催されます。メインテーマは「慈しみの実践－共通の未来のために」です。

I want to think about the main theme. I start with my understanding of the words in the context of the world assembly.

今日はこのメインテーマについて考えてみたいと思います。まずは世界大会の文脈における私なりの言葉の理解から始めます。

I interpret the word “future” as the time which has not arrived yet or will come from now onward. I could say it is the time and world after each moment.

「未来」は、未だ来ていない、これから来る時間ということで理解しています。一瞬一瞬の先の時空世界とも言えると思います。

I understand the word “common” as “shared” or “collective as a group of humankind, not as an individual human being.”

「共通」については、「分かち合い」、とか、「個人ではなく、人類という集団」と理解しています。

I interpret “our” as a group of humankind, not as a human being, which is related to the above mentioned “common” in the context that “Our” is different from “My.” In a broader sense, it means all forms of life which include humankind. In this context, “Our common” is an emphatic expression, and only “Our” or “My” can be logical enough. Therefore, the Japanese translation of the main theme by RfP Japan doesn’t put the Japanese word of “Our.”

「私たちの」については「私の」ではないという意味で、上述の「共通」に関連しますが、一人の人間としてではなく、人類という集団としての意味であると理解します。より広義な意味では人類を含むあらゆる生命体を意味します。その意味では、「私たちの共通の」は強調的表現であり、「私たちの」あるいは「共通の」だけでも論理が成り立つと理解します。世界宗教者平和会議日本委員会の邦訳では、その意味で「私たちの」が省略されています。

Then, I want to talk about the words “Caring for.” “Care” has a comprehensive meaning. Love, compassion, mercy, generosity, caring, being by the side, sympathy, helping, empathy, kindness, and tenderness, etc. It also has lots of English synonyms.

さて、”Care for”についてです。Careは大変広義な意味を持つ言葉です。愛、慈悲、慈愛、優しさ、お世話、寄り添い、心配、手助け、配慮、思い遣り、気配りなどです。英語もたくさんの類義語があります。

Therefore, if I express in words my current understanding of the central theme, it becomes as follows:

従いまして、メインテーマに関する現時点での私の理解を言葉で表すと以下のようになります。

“All living beings including us human beings have a common destiny. For the common destiny, the future is shared, with no alternative. Therefore, each one of us fosters the mind and heart of compassion and care, and practice love and compassion for others in daily living, both individually and collectively, to make our important future in which we can live together by supporting each other.”

「私たち人類を含むすべての生命体という運命共同体にとって、未来は他の選択肢がない共通のものである。したがって、その大切な未来を、すべての生命体にとって互いに支え合いながら生きることのできるものにするために、一人ひとりが慈愛の心を育み、個人として、そして集団として、他者に対する愛と慈しみを日常で実践していく。」

The sub-themes focus on the several issues we humankind faces and should overcome. What I especially pay attention is the two missions, namely, the mission we humankind should fulfill, and the one I, as a person should fulfill. In my previous post, I spoke about “Our mission and My mission.” I think these two missions are oneness.

サブテーマでは人類が直面し、克服すべき課題が取り上げられています。私が特に関心を持っているのが、人類としての私たちの実践すべきミッションと一人の人間としての私の実践すべきミッションです。以前にも本ブログで私たちのミッションと私のミッションについて語りました。この二つのミッションは二つで一つであると思っています。

The conference and assembly are the platforms which provide the opportunity to concretize the actions by both a religious organization and by a person of faith. So far, many declarations and statements have been created at each conference or assembly. However, the contents of such documents are more or less theoretical, idealistic and conceptual, and most nominatives are “religion” and “we, religious people.”

私たち宗教者として、組織として実践すべき行動を具体化すること、同時に信仰者としての私が実践すべき行動を具体化すること、その場を提供するのが会議や大会であると思います。これまでも大会では宣言文や声明文が発表されてきました。しかし、内容は理念的、理想的、概念的であり、「宗教」や「我々宗教者」が主語のものが多く見られます。

I think the effort of using nominative such as “I, having a faith” will be required in the future in addition to the above nominatives. At the same time, daily time and place for actions need to be incorporated more, in addition to the limitation of peculiar times and places.

今後はそうした主語に加えて「信仰を持つ私」という主語を取り入れていく努力が求められるのではないかと思います。同時に実践する時と場所も特定の時間や場所という制限に加えて、日常の時間と場所を取り入れていく必要があると思うのです。

In one word, we should think genuinely not only what we should do, but what I should do, and what I can do. I believe it is a world assembly which provides a chance for all the participants to discuss these questions sincerely and search for the way and method to practice each other.

一言で言いますと、私たち何を為すべきか、のみでなく、私は何を為すべきか、何ができるか、を真剣に考えていくことです。このテーマを真剣に語り合い、互いに実践の道と方法を探し出す場が世界大会であると思います。

What we, and I shall or can do for “Caring for Our Common Future” in our daily living? I will live my life by always bearing in my mind and heart this question.

「慈しみの実践－共通の未来のために」私たちは、そして、私は何を為すべきで何ができるのでしょうか。それも毎日の生活の中で。このことを常に意識しながら生きていきたいと思います。

“For what am I living today?”

「私は、今日、何のために生きているのでしょうか？」
