Compassion / 慈悲

Several years ago, I read in a book that compassion is Com + passion. Com originally means togetherness or mass. Therefore compassion implies the celebration of love. When I found this explanation of compassion, I was amazed and moved. To be compassionate requires to be full of passion, I interpret it in this way.

In all religious traditions, compassion and love are being most highly valued as a moral and spiritual basis as well as a cord of conduct. Since I became aware of the vital combination of mercifulness and passion, I have been trying to live my daily life with passion and love, often failed though.

In August 2016, I visited Beirut of Lebanon together with Rev. Kosho Niwano, Moderator of Religions for Peace International for meeting with religious leaders as well as attending Palestinian refugee camps. We met an elderly leader of NGO supporting Palestinians for last 70 years in Lebanon. He is Palestinian who was forced to leave his homeland. He has been devoting himself wholeheartedly to serve for his large family members in refugee camps.

Asian Conference of Religions for Peace(ACRP)/Religions for Peace Asia(RfP Asia) has 41 years history this year. From the foundation up to now, so many leaders and members of religious and faith communities in Asia have been dedicating to fulfill the sacred mission of ACRP and contributing to the development of ACRP.  I believe their compassion, the mass passion of love and mercifulness have always been the driving force of this movement.

Let us cherish and keep this wonderful tradition of compassion in daily our dialogue and action.

数年前に、私はある本でコンパッション（慈悲）はコン（塊）+　パッション（情熱）であるという説明に出会いました。すなわち慈悲は情熱の塊であるというのです。私はとても驚くとともに感動しました。慈悲深くあるためには情熱を持たねばならない、私はそのように解釈しました。

全ての宗教において慈悲、愛は、倫理的、精神的な基盤、そして行動規範として最も高い価値とされています。こうして愛と情熱の重要な組み合わせに気づいて以来、私は日々を情熱と愛をもって生きようと努力してきました。失敗の連続ですが。

昨年8月、私は宗教指導者との面会、並びにパレスチナ難民キャンプ視察のために世界宗教者平和会議の国際実務議長である庭野光祥師と共にレバノンを訪問しました。そこで私たちは70年以上にわたりパレスチナの人々を支援し続ける一人のNGOの老年指導者にお会いしました。彼自身パレスチナの祖国を追われた人です。難民キャンプにいる大きな家族たちに全身全霊で奉仕する人生を歩んできた方です。

彼は一人の例外もなくすべての人を愛する人です。彼を祖国から追いやった人々にさえ何ら負の感情を抱いていません。移動のバスの中で居眠りをしている時でさえ微笑んでいました。厳しい生活環境の中で、なぜいつも笑顔を絶やさずにいられるのだろうか、私は不思議に思っていました。何日か彼と一緒に過ごすうちにその理由がわかり始めました。彼は周りのすべての人に対し、情熱と愛を持っているのです。そうです、深い慈悲によって彼は人間に対する真の奉仕者になったのです。

ACRPは今年で41年目を迎えました。創設以来今日まで、アジアの多くの宗教指導者とメンバーの皆さまがACRPの聖なる使命を果たすため、そしてACRPの発展に寄与するために身を捧げてこられたのです。彼らの慈悲、すなわち愛という情熱の塊がこの運動の原動力であり続けてきたのです。

この慈悲という素晴らしい伝統を大切に守りながら、これからも日常の対話と行動に邁進して行こうではありませんか。
