Continuation is power / 継続は力なり

The 9th ACRP General Assembly will be held in Tokyo most probably in mid-October 2020. Yesterday we had the 3 rd Assembly Preparatory Committee meeting through Zoom. Each committee member can participate in a meeting at his / her place of work or residence. The world is changing so fast to enable us to meet and talk so easily which we could not imagine until a while ago. What we need to do is to fix a schedule of each participant beforehand with consideration of the time difference etc. One can easily join a meeting from the office, home and visiting a place with a PC or smartphone.

第9回ACRP総会は2020年10月中旬に東京で開催されることが決定済みです。昨日は第三回大会準備委員会を国際テレビ会議で開催しました。各委員はそれぞれの居住地から会議に参加できます。少し前までは考えられないほど、世の中はすごい速さで変わっています。事前に時差などを考慮して参加者の都合を調整すればいいだけです。オフィスや出先からも気軽に参加できますし、スマフォ参加も可能です。

The dates, schedule, venue, program and the scale of the assembly are now at the stage of final formulation through APC meetings. Yesterday we discussed the details. It is the process of finalizing the overall planning for discussion at the forthcoming Executive Committee of ACRP to be held in India next April.

これまでの準備委員会で総会の大枠の日程や会場、プログラム、大会規模などの最終案が決まりつつあります。昨日はその詳細を討議しました。来年4月にインドで開催される執行理事会での審議のための全体企画案を最終化するプロセスです。

We have three years to the next general assembly. Some say that the detailed preparation is too early at this stage, but in reality, there are several important reasons. ACRP adopted at the last Inchon General Assembly a resolution to aim for an action-oriented organization. The primary purpose is not to hold the festive General Assembly but to take and implement concrete actions.

 総会まで約3年あります。現段階では準備が早すぎるのではという声も聞かれますが、実はそれにはいくつか大切な理由があるのです。前回のインチョン総会でACRPは行動する運動体を目指すことを採択しました。華々しい総会の開催を目的とするのではなく、具体的な行動を起こし、実践することを目的とすることにしたのです。

The General Assembly will be transformed into a place and an opportunity to keep the momentum of specific actions, to enable ACRP leaders to continue acquiring the driving force of movement through dialogue and interactions among members as well as sharing and confirming ACRP vision and mission. Therefore, by starting from the earliest stage the preparation of the General Assembly, we will be able to concentrate our valuable human and financial resources on the concrete, practical actions for about five years between each General Assembly.

総会は具体的な行動をとり続けるための道しるべ、運動の源泉力を得続けるためのACRPリーダー並びにメンバーによる対話・交流そしてACRPビジョン、ミッションの分かち合い、確認の場と変容していくことになるでしょう。したがって、総会準備はできる限り早い段階から始めることによって、総会の間の約5年の期間を具体的実践活動に、貴重な人的、財的資源をより集中することができるようになります。

Tokyo secretariat is now considering the idea of three areas of pillar activities: reconciliation and conflict settlement based on inter-religious dialogue, reduction, and prevention of human trafficking, and human dignity education to help people become aware of one’s and other’s equal dignity of life. While doing trial and error, we shall start to move forward step by step and to manage our movement in a challenging spirit of thinking while acting.

現在、ACRP事務局は活動の柱を宗教間対話をベースとした紛争和解、人身売買の削減と防止、そしてあらゆる命の尊厳性に目覚めるための人間の尊厳教育の3領域に絞る方向で検討中です。試行錯誤をしながらも、まず一歩を踏み出していこう、そして行動をしながら考えていこうというチャレンジ精神で運動体の運営に取り組みます。

In addition to these areas, we respect an initiative of each national chapter and commission and are about to move forward in the spirit of “Let’s start with whatever we can.”

これらの領域に加え、各国チャプター並びに各コミッションのイニシアチブを尊重し、「まずはできるところから始めよう」の精神でそれぞれに動き始めていこうとしています。

By the way, I also think that I shall do my best to continue till last without throwing away what I decided once in the middle of the road. But I can come up so easily for many reasons I shall quit. I’ve said enough about the importance of continuation. I want to live my life without giving up. I have to confess that I have recently been staying away from my volunteer work for a night visit to homeless people, with the reason for my many overseas travels. I will resume!

ところで、自分も一度決めたことは途中で投げずに最後まで頑張ろうと思っています。でもあきらめる理由はいくらでもすぐに思いつくのです。これまでも何度も継続の大切さを言ってきました。決してあきらめないで生きていきたいと思います。そう言えば最近は海外出張にかこつけてホームレスの方々への夜回りボランティア活動もすっかりご無沙汰してしまっていることを皆さんに告白します。再開します！

I think we live in an era in which we can no longer divide or distinguish activities between borders of domestic and international, or top and grassroots level. I start with what I can do, and I feel nowadays from the bottom of my heart that it is vital to keep going once I started.

もはや、国内外、トップと草の根レベルという境界で活動を分けることができない時代に私たちは生きているのです。できることから始め、そして始めたら続けることが大切だと最近つくづくと感じています。
