Hope in the midst of despair / 絶望の中の希望

I visited one African country for studying the medical support project for HIV patients implemented for nearly 15 years by one of the Catholic movements called Saint Egidio Community, and have just come back to Tokyo.

今月私はあるアフリカの国を訪問し、聖エジディオ共同体というカトリックの運動体が過去15年間実施してきているHIV患者支援のプロジェクトを視察し、昨日帰国しました。

I got several chances to meet and talk with what they call themselves “Activists”, who used to be HIV positives and now help HIV patients overcome this disease. Many HIV patients are so poor that they can not access any medical treatment. It is a serious problem.

元HIV患者で現在は病を克服し、「アクティビスト」としてHIV患者を支援する人々に会い、お話しする機会を何度が頂きました。多くのHIV患者は貧困のためにいかなる医療サービスや治療にもアクセスできないのです。非常に深刻な問題です。

In such a severe circumstance, some religious and humanitarian organizations are giving them various assistance in preventive and medical treatment fields.

そうした厳しい環境の中で、宗教組織や人道団体が予防並びに治療分野で様々な支援活動を展開しています。

I soon become aware of the common saying by many activists through listening to their testimonies. They said, “When I was diagnosed as HIV positive, I felt I was thrust down in hell. I have children, and my husband ran away. I was left alone in the midst of despair.” At that time, they said they were fortunate to meet “hope”, “Without meeting with “hope”, I might have committed suicide”, they continued.

アクティビストの方々とお会いし、彼らの体験を数多く聞いているうちに私は彼らの話の中に一つの共通の語りが存在することに気づいたのです。彼らは「私はHIVのポジティブであることを宣告されたとき、奈落の底に突き落とされたと感じました。私は子供を抱え、絶望の中に取り残されたのです」と語りました。彼らはその絶望の淵で「希望」に出会えてとてもラッキーだったと話しました。「もし、その時に希望に会うことができなかったなら、多分、私は自ら命を絶っていたでしょう」、そう語り続けました。

The hope they met is word and action of love and compassion, given and offered to them by religious and humanitarian supporters. They are providing patients with drugs and other necessary medical treatment for free.

彼らが出会った希望とは宗教や人道組織で働く人々の愛と慈悲に満ちた言葉と行動です。彼らは無料で薬や医療サービスを提供し続けているのです。

The common fact particularly inspired me that almost everyone who is now activists was freed from despair by generous and courageous words of a caretaker whom they first met in the service center. Her name is Jane, and we met her. They could find hope for living in the midst of despair.

私が特に感動を覚えたのは現在アクティビストとして活動している人たちのほとんどが始めにサービスセンターで出会った方の優しい、そして励みに満ちた言葉によって絶望の淵から這い上がることができたという事実でした。ジェーンという女性で私たちもお会いしました。HIV陽性の方たちは絶望の真只中で生き続ける希望を見出したのです。

I have learned the profound effect of words and actions of loving kindness and compassion. Through having that kind of miraculous life experience, many HIV positives became activists after overcoming or even receiving treatment of their disease for helping HIV patients overcome disease in the same way they were helped.

人を愛すること、慈愛で包むこと、その言葉と行動が絶望を抱える人にいかに大きな影響を与えるか、そのことを深く学びました。この奇跡の人生体験を経験したことによって元HIV患者の方々は病気を克服し、あるいはポジティブの方々は治療を続けながら同じ病気で苦しむ人々を助けるためにアクティビストとして生きているのです。

I felt that I should try hard to make myself hope for those who are in despair. I know it’s not easy. But, it is one of the core reasons for my being as a human in this world.

私はこの体験を通して自分が絶望の中にいる方の希望になる努力をしなければならないと強く感じました。もちろん、容易なことではありません。しかしそれがこの世界に人間として存在する大切な理由の一つであるからです。

Some of my friends soon start assisting the “activist” activity in this country. The name of this project is “Dream.”　 Of course, I will join them.

友人たちがアクティビストの活動支援をもうすぐ始めます。プロジェクトの名前は「Dream」です。もちろん、私も参加していくつもりです
