I want to be an Earthian / 地球人になりたい

There is no English word like Earthian. That means we humankind don’t have such a concept. However, we nowadays often hear the word of the Global Citizen, which seems similar to the Earthian concept.

When I returned to Japan after my work at UNHCR, a strong wish came to my mind that I wanted to be an Earthian. For me, Earthian primarily belongs to the earth and secondly belongs to the particular country. I am Earthian and Japanese. This order was significant to me, I thought.

If I think I am Japanese and Earthian, my identity as Japanese becomes stronger than the one as Earthian which transcends my particular national identity. Of course, one’s own national identity is essential. However, the collective identity such as this Earthian or homo sapience plays a crucial role in the coexistence of humanity in the world.

The reason why the concept of Earthian came up in my mind is that I developed the consciousness of global citizenship through my 3-year working experience at UNHCR with staff members of multiple nationalities working for refugee population throughout the world. When I look closely at ACRP, we all members are Asian and have respective nationalities.

When we look at various issues in the Asian region, I think it’s important to address these issues from the viewpoint of Asian. For example, child or woman trafficking problems have been/are very common in some countries and regions in Asia. ACRP has both Asian view and each nationalistic view. IThis is one of the great advantages we have.

I am in the process of becoming an Asian and Earthian. I want to continue my challenge in so doing.

英語では地球人(Earthian)という言葉はありません。造語です。つまり、人類はそのような概念を有していないことを意味します。しかし、地球人という言葉に近い地球市民（global citizen）という表現は最近しばしば耳にします。

UNHCRでの仕事が終わり日本に帰国したとき、私の心の中に地球人になりたいという強い願いが沸き起こりました。私にとって地球人とは第一に地球に属し、第二に国家に属するというものです。私は地球人であり日本人です。この順序が私にとっては決定的に重要であると考えました。

もし私が自分は日本人であり地球人であると考えるのであれば特定の国民アイデンティティーを超越する地球人アイデンティティーよりも日本人としてのアイデンティティーが強くなるのです。もちろん、私たち自身の国民アイデンティティーはとても大切なものです。しかし、地球人あるいはホモ・サピエンスのアイデンティティーは人類の共生にとって非常に重要な役割を果たすのです。

私の心の中に地球人になりたいという強い思いが沸き起こったのは、世界中の難民の方々のために働く多数の国籍を持つ職員と共に、3年間、UNHCRで働いたことによって私の中に地球市民意識が醸成されたためであったと思います。

ACRPもしかりです。私たちメンバーはアジア人であると同時にそれぞれの国の国民でもあります。私たちはアジア人としての視点からアジア地域の様ざまな問題に取り組むことが重要であると考えます。たとえばアジア地域やいくつかの国では子供や女性の人身売買は共通の課題でもあるからです。ACRPはアジア的視点と各国の視点の両方を有しています。これこそが私たちACRPが有する最大の強みの一つではないでしょうか。

私はいま、アジア人と地球人になる道を歩んでいます。これからもこの挑戦を続けていきたいと思っています。
