Who is the leading player in solving a problem? Is any third party or a person in the midst of the problem a key player?

問題を解決する主人公は誰でしょう？第三者でしょうか、それとも問題を抱えるその人自身でしょうか？

For example, there is a teaching called “Bodhisattva Spring up from the earth” in the Lotus Sutra of Mahayana Buddhism. The Bodhisattva springs up from the earth means the Bodhisattva who emerges from the place where he or she lives. Bodhisattva is a person who aims at becoming Buddha together with others through practicing Buddha’s teachings in everyday life. In actual words, it is a person aiming at living a peaceful and happy human being together with others while letting one’s dignified life shine through supporting and helping each other without distinguishing oneself and another, based upon the spirit of thorough compassion.

例えば、大乗仏教の経典の一つである法華経には地涌の菩薩という教えが説かれています。地涌の菩薩とはその土地の中から湧き出てくる菩薩という意味です。菩薩とは仏の教えを日常で実践して自分も人も一緒に仏の境地を目指す、わかりやすく言えば、徹底した慈悲の精神で自他の区別なく共に支え合い、助け合いながら、尊厳なる命を輝かせて安らかで幸せな人生を共に生きる人間になることを目指す人を意味します。

Namely, it is a person who devotes one’s whole life to solving problems while living in the midst of the issues in the society, in the country, never averting one’s own eyes from them

すなわち、地涌の菩薩とはその国で、その社会で生きながら、抱える問題から目をそらさずに問題の真っただ中でその問題とともに生き、問題を解決するために人生を捧げる人を指すのです。

If that’s true, then, don’t the third party or an expatriate have any chance or room to play any role, do they? Of course, they can play a vital role to help people facing the problems alleviate or overcome sufferings and difficulties, as a side player by offering assistance and helping hands, I believe.

もしもそれが真実であるのなら第三者や外部の専門家はいかなる役割を果たすこともできないのでしょうか。もちろん、わき役として支援や手助けを行い、彼らが苦しみや問題を和らげ、乗り越えるお手伝いをするという大切な役割を果たすことができると思うのです。

However, we shall never forget and always bear in mind that people in the midst of sufferings are key and leading players, not us people of the third party.

しかし、決して忘れてならないこと、常に肝に銘じておくべきこと、それは苦しんでいる人々が主役であり、第三者である我々は脇役であるということです。

For a week till yesterday, I was on an overseas mission as one of the members of Religions for Peace International delegation for interreligious dialogue in seeking the conflict resolution. I have deeply convinced myself the importance of the primary player’s role and commitment.

昨日までの一週間、私は平和のための諸宗教国際代表団の一員として紛争解決を求める宗教間対話のための海外使節団に参加しました。 このミッションによって、私は主役の役割と挺身の重要さを深く再認識したのです。

At the same time, I have also deepened awareness of the critical role and responsibility of a by-player.

同時に、わき役の役割と挺身の重要性にも深く気づいたのです。
