One and Only dignity / 唯一無二の尊厳性

When I once attended the feeding assistance program for homeless people in Tokyo, the person in charge of the program told us that each volunteer should attend the activity by bearing in mind “one and only dignity” of each homeless person. The expression of one and only dignity inspired me a lot.

The dignity of life and human is a common expression, but one and only dignity sounded very fresh to me. Each person regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, nationality, social status has one and only dignity of oneself. It is a sort of an absolute value, the preciousness of everyone even though she or he is being marginalized at the corner of the society.

When I handed over rice balls, Japanese simple style of lunch, to some homeless people during the program, I together with some volunteers did it with a smile and respectful voices, saying “please receive this”. Almost all recipients expressed thanks to us. Repeating the words in my heart and mind, I truly felt the persons in front of me are very valuable and treasures. There was no boundary between us such as giver and receiver. We are just the same human beings, interrelated and interconnected with each other. We have to respect “one and only dignity” of everyone.

In our daily lives, we easily forget this attitude of respecting each other based upon “one and only dignity” of each person. How can we keep this attitude every day? I think we need to practice it sincerely with our family members who seems the highest hurdles in so doing. It’s much easier said than done! At the same time, we need to see and recognize “one and only dignity” within ourselves.

One of the ACRP’s missions exists in providing various forms of education for sharing this very important way of living as many people as possible, I believe.

東京でのホームレス炊き出し支援活動に参加したとき、責任者の方が私たちボランティアに対し、ホームレスの方々お一人お一人の「唯一無二の尊厳性」を肝に銘じてくださいと言われました。唯一無二の尊厳性という言葉が深く胸に響きました。

人間と生命の尊厳性という言葉は聞きなれていますが、唯一無二の尊厳性という表現は私にとってはとても新鮮でした。年齢、性別、民族、国籍、社会的地位などに関係なく、各人は唯一無二の尊厳性を有しているのです。社会の周縁に追いやられてる人達の絶対的な価値、重要性を意味するものです。

日本のシンプルな食事であるおにぎりをホームレスの方お一人おひとりに手渡すとき、私たちボランティアは笑顔でどうぞお受け取り下さいと言ってお渡しします。ほとんどの方がありがとうございますとお礼を言われます。心の中で唯一無二の尊厳性を唱えながら、させて頂くのですが、そうしますと目の前にいる方たちがとても素晴らしい宝物の存在であることを心から実感するのです。そのとき、私たちの間にはあげる人、もらう人などという境界は全く存在しません。お互いに関係し合い、繋がり合っている同じ人間なのです。全ての人の「唯一無二の尊厳性」を尊敬することが大切です。

日常生活ではこの「唯一無二の尊厳性」に基づいてお互いを尊重するという姿勢をどうしても忘れしまいがちになります。毎日、どのようにしたらこの姿勢を保つことができるのでしょうか。最も高いハードルになりがちな自分の家族に対して真摯に練習と実践をしなければならないでしょう。本当に「言うは易し、行うは難し」ですが。同時に私たち自身の「唯一無二の尊厳性」もしっかりと自覚していく必要があります。

一人でも多くの人々とこの重要な生き方を分かち合うための様々な教育を提供していくこともACRPの重要な使命の一つであると信じます。
