Our common future / 私たちの共通の未来

At present, more than 7.5 billion human beings live in the world. It is obvious that all of us live on earth have only one common future. It is a future of our earth and humanity. Although each of us has a different, independent future in each human life, none of us can be independent of or escape from the common future of the earth and whole humanity.

現在、世界の人口は75億人を超えています。地上に住む私たちすべての人間はたった一つの共通の未来を持っていることは明らかです。私たちの地球と人類の未来です。一人ひとりはそれぞれの人生で異なる、独立した未来は持っているのですが、誰一人として地球と人類全体の共通の未来から独立して、自由になることはできないのです。

Therefore, each of us has a responsibility for our common future. We cannot simply ask someone else to care for our common future. It is me who should be fully responsible for our common future.

ですから、私たち一人ひとりは、私たちの共通の未来に対する責任を負っているのです。単純に誰か他の人に共通の未来をケアすることを頼むことはできません。共通の未来に責任を持っているのは私たち一人ひとりなのです。

What if we think each of us alone cannot give any influence on the whole humanity at present or in the future and live our own lives in a self-centered manner, our common future will surely be filled with the collision of egoistic human beings. All sorts of conflict and war may prevail over the world. Under such a dark environment, no one, in this context, none of our future children can live a happy and healthy life.

もし私たちが一人では今も未来も人類全体にいかなる影響も与えることなどできないと考えて好き勝手に生きるとしたら、私たちの共通の未来は自己中心の人間の衝突で満たされてしまうでしょう。あらゆる種類の対立や戦争が世界を蔓延してしまうかもしれません。そのような暗槓とした状況下では誰も、すなわち私たちの未来の子どもの誰一人として幸せで健康的な人生を送ることなどできないでしょう。

I have been in Europe since　14　October　up　until　today　for　the　inter-religious　dialogue　held　by　Religions　for　Peace　International,　in which we discussed in depth as to how to address critical issues we humanity are facing with through inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue, for the common good of humanity.

今月の14日から今日まで私はReligions for Peance International 主催の宗教間対話プログラム参加のためにヨーロッパに滞在しています。人類の共通の善のために、今、人類が直面している様々な深刻な課題に対し、宗教間並びに文化間対話を通していかに対応していくかを深く討議しました。

It seems impossible to resolve the issues immediately, but we feel the foremost importance exists in our efforts of transforming our self-centered way of living into the way of mutual tolerance and respect through dialogue and interaction between different faiths, culture, and ethnicity etc.

問題を直ちに解決することは不可能に思えますが、異なる宗教、文化、民族の人々の間の対話と交流を通して自己中心の生き方から相互寛容と尊重の生き方に私たちを変容していく努力こそ最も重要であると感じています。

Everyone loves one’s children. If we are to leave a healthy and secure future for our decedents, we need to transform our way of living into that of relating to others without sparing any effort. It’s easier said than done, but we have to do it now. Otherwise, it will be too late to change our common future.

誰もがわが子を愛します。もし、私たちが私たちの子孫に健康で安全な未来を残すべきであるのなら、私たちは他者と惜しみなくつながる生き方に変わっていく必要があるのです。言うは易し、行うは難し、ですが、今こそそれを実行していかなければなりません。さもなければ私たちの共通の未来を変えるには遅すぎてしまうでしょう。

I am deepening such a conviction during this week.

そんな思いを強くした一週間でした。
