Risk and Mission / リスクとミッション

Recently in Japan, a controversial issue attracts the general public’s eyes. It is a release of a journalist from more than three years’ captivity in Syria.

最近、日本では議論の的になっている話題があます。それは内戦の続くシリアに3年以上拘束されていたジャーナリストの解放についてです。

There are pros and cons of this journalist. Some say it was his fault by not following the government’s admonition, and others say his action was one of the journalist’s authentic missions.

このジャーナリストについては賛否両論があります。ある人々は政府の勧告に従わなかったのだから彼は自業自得だといい、ある人々は彼の行動はジャーナリストとしての真の使命の一つであったと語ります。

Although the former seems the great majority in Japan, some foreign journalists say it’s necessary for journalists to take risks to obtain the real and true information on the spot in a perilous situation.

日本では前者の意見が多数派のように見受けられますが、何人かの著名な外国のジャーナリストたちは、非常に危険な地域における真実の情報を得るために危険を冒すことは、ジャーナリストにとっては必要なことなのだ、と語っています。

I understand both opinions, but I share the value of taking a risk to fulfill the mission of one’s profession. Notably, it applies to the mission of religions. Because religions teach the importance of practicing love and compassion for others in a selfless way or in the way of oneness between oneself and others. If some people are in a risky situation and need help, people of faith shall take a risk and go to the side of such people, as they are our brothers and sisters.

両者の意見ともに私は理解できます。しかし、自分の使命を果たすために危険を冒すという価値には共感を覚えます。特にこれは宗教の使命に当てはまると思うのです。なぜなら、宗教は自分を空しくして、あるいは自分と他者の一体性を大切にして愛と慈悲の行いを実践することの大切さを説くからです。

What is a meaning of “taking a risk”? What does the mission indeed mean? What is my mission, and what is our mission? The Japanese journalist entered Syria and immediately captured. For what did he enter the war-torn country? Is it because he was courageous enough, or too much ambitious, or he was fully aware of his mission? Is it OK for us, religious people, to comment on this issue just like a critic, or should we make it a good chance of contemplating our mission?

「危険を冒す」とはどういう意味でしょうか？使命が真に意味するところは何でしょうか？私の使命は何か、私たちの使命は何か？日本人ジャーナリストはシリアに入国した直後に拘束されました。彼は何のために、紛争で分断されている国に入ったのでしょうか？勇気があったからなのでしょうか、あるいは無謀だったのでしょうか、それとも自分の使命を深く自覚していたからなのでしょうか？宗教者である私たちは批評家のように単にコメントをしているだけでいいのでしょうか、あるいはこれを機会に自分たちの使命を深く掘り下げて見つめるべきなのでしょうか？

Without taking a risk, we might not be able to serve for others, I think. I will continue to pursue this fundamental question.

私自身は危険を冒すことなしに他者に奉仕することはできないのではないか、と思うのです。これからも、この重要な問いを追い続けていきたいと思っています。
