Take time and labor / 手間暇をかける

We, people, who live in advanced countries are too much accustomed to convenience and tend to avoid spending too much time and labor. Also, we are also accustomed to being in security and stability, so that we tend to stay away from taking risks.

私たち、先進国に住む人間は、利便性に慣れすぎて、手間暇をかけることを避ける傾向があるのではないでしょうか。加えて、安住にも慣れすぎて、敢えてリスクを取らない方向に行きがちです。

For example, we are too much machine-dependent in every facet of our daily lives, such as an automobile, electric cycle, and dishwasher, and so on. Thus, our physical strength is getting weaker and weaker.  Of course, I don’t have any intention to deny machine.

例えば私たちは日常生活のあらゆる場面であまりにも機械に頼り過ぎています。自動車、電動自転車、自動皿洗い機などです。 結果的に私たちの身体力はますます弱くなりつつあります。もちろん、機械を否定する気持ちは毛頭ありません。

What matters is the degree of dependence. Nowadays, we can write a letter very quickly by using personal computers, etc. We tend to avoid handwriting which takes more time and labor than machine writing. However, we are pleased when we receive a very polite hand-written letter.

要は依存度の問題なのです。手紙などにしても今はPC等で手早く書けてしまいます。手書きはどうしても手間暇がかかり、避けがちになります。しかし、丁寧な手書きの手紙をもらった時はとてもうれしいものです。

As for the security, we tend to pursue only our security, not others’ one. As long as we discern our security from others’ safety, there may arise the possibility of conflict between securities on two different sides. Therefore, we need to pursue protection for all by taking our time and labor with courage, I believe.

安全に関しては、私たちは他者の安全ではなく、自分たちの安全のみを追求しがちです。私たちがこうして他者の安全から自分の安全を区別する限り、二つの異なる立場の安全の間に対立が生じる可能性が発生するのです。だからこそ、私たちは勇気を持って手間暇をかけてすべての人々の安全を追求する必要があると思うのです。

The selection of a more relaxed way without spending the necessary time and energy may result in de-evolution of humanity in the long run. I would not say I like a bothersome work but must try to do any job mindfully by taking my time and labor without sparing any effort.

必要な手間暇をかけずに楽な道を選ぶことは長い目で見れば人類にとっては退化につながるのかもしれません。私自身、面倒臭いことは嫌いです。しかし惜しみなく手間暇をかけて、いかなる仕事にも真心で取り組む努力をしていかなければと思っています。
