Who are my neighbors? / 私の隣人とは誰でしょうか？

Commonly speaking, a neighbor means a person who lives next to or near to me. Jesus Christ teaches the importance that we should love our neighbors.

普通、隣人とは私の隣、あるいは近くに生きる人を意味します。イエス・キリストは私たちに隣人を愛することの重要性を説きました。

Incidentally, who really are our neighbors? For example, who are my neighbors? I live in Tokyo Metropolitan city of Japan. Are my neighbors people who live adjacent to my residence? Are those who live in the same town or even in Tokyo included in neighbors?

ところで現代における隣人とはいったい誰のことを指すのでしょう？たとえば、私の隣人とは誰でしょうか？私は日本の首都である東京に住んでいます。私の隣人は私の住居の両隣に住んでいる人々なのでしょうか？あるいは同じ区や東京に住んでいる人々をも含むのでしょうか？

If we say a neighbor simply, it differs by each one’s definition. Some may say neighbors are people who live very close to them. Others may say neighbors include everyone who lives in the world in our global time.

一口に隣人と言ってもそれは各人の定義によって異なるでしょう。ある人は文字通り、隣人とは彼ら自身のすぐ近くに住む人を意味するでしょうし、グローバルな時代における隣人とは地球に住むすべての人を意味すると解釈する人もいるでしょう。

Jesus Christ teaches “love your neighbors.” I, as a Buddhist, want to follow the latter definition of neighbors. In our contemporary world, neighbors truly mean global neighbors, I suppose.

イエスは隣人を愛しなさいと説きます。私は仏教徒として後者の隣人定義に従いたいと考えます。現代世界において、隣人が真に意味するところは地球的隣人である、と私は思うのです。

The neighbors for us Japanese are not only Korean and Chinese but other Asians or even Africans, Americans and Europeans, etc. They are all neighbors on this unique mother earth.

日本人にとっての隣人とは韓国人や中国人だけでなく、他のアジア人、アフリカ人、アメリカ人、ヨーロッパ人などです。彼らはたった一つの母なる星である地球の隣人たちです。

If we interpret our neighbors in this way, and if we are to follow the preaching of Jesus Christ, an exact humane message to all of us, we shall love them all as our neighbors. Even for me, a Buddhist, the message of Jesus Christ saying one shall love one’s neighbor is a very core message, a universal one to all human beings in the world.

このように隣人を解釈し、すべての人間にとって真の人間的なメッセージであるイエス・キリストの教えに従うのであれば、私たちはすべての人々を隣人として愛するべきなのです。仏教徒である私にとってもイエス・キリストの隣人を愛すべしというメッセージは中枢のメッセージであり、人類にとって普遍のメッセージなのです。

If each one of us can hold this sort of idea even at the moment every day, we can make changes in our society, I believe.

私たち一人一人が、一日の中でたとえ一時でもこの思いを抱くことができたなら、世の中を変えていくことができる、そう思うのです。
