いのちのつながり / Linkage of lives

命ある限り、懸命に生きることができれば、それ以上の幸せはないのではないでしょうか。命を賭けることのできるものを探し出し、命を生き切る人生はなんと素晴らしいものでしょう。

Aren’t we happier if we can live our lives fully as long as we live? How marvelous our lives are if we can live up fully by finding out what we could entirely devote our lives.

一方で、毎日、紛争やテロで命の危機にさらされていたり、貧困の中で、その日を生き延びるのに懸命な人たちもたくさんいます。

On the contrary, so many people are facing the threats of losing their lives by conflicts or terrors or are risking their lives to survive every day amid poverty.

日本の童話作家で詩人でもある宮沢賢治は「世界全体が幸福にならないうちは個人の幸福はあり得ない」という言葉を残しました。彼は熱心な仏教徒でしたが、この言葉は卓越した宗教メッセージであると思います。

Kenji Miyazawa, a Japanese fairy-tale teller, and poet left a famous word, “No individual happiness can be realized unless the whole world becomes happy.” He had a deep faith in Buddha’s teachings. I believe his word is one of the outstanding religious messages.

個人と世界全体は一つの大きな命でつながっている、というのが彼の発したメッセージでしょう。宗教的には人類を含めたあらゆる生命体は神仏の子どもであること、自然を含めたあらゆる存在は神の被造物であること、でしょうか。

His message indicates that an individual and the whole world are united in one great life. Isn’t it that all living beings including humankind are the children of God and Buddha, and all existences are the God’s creatures.

しかし、現実の世界では残念ながら子供同士が傷つけ合っています。神仏のメッセージに真摯に耳を傾け、地球という大きな家に住む家族として互いに助け合い、支え合いながら生きようと努力する人が一人ずつ増えてくれば、この世界は神仏の願われる世界に近づいていくことができるのだと思います。

However, it’s unfortunate that the children are hurting each other in the real world. If the number of persons will increase one by one, who endeavor to help and support each other as members of the global family by sincerely listening to the messages of God and Buddha, the world will come closer to the one which God and Buddha genuinely wish, I believe.

人は傷つけ合うために命を授けられたのではなく、生かし合うために命を授けられた、それが「命を懸けて生きる」、という意味ではないでしょうか。

The true meaning of “living a full life” exists in that we humans are not given our lives for hurting each other, but for supporting each other’s lives, isn’t it right?

「犠牲者が一人でもいる限り、自分の幸福は実現できない。」このメッセージを見つめながら今日という一生を生きようと思います。

“I cannot realize my happiness as long as there exists a victim.” I am going to live my life today with my heart on this message.
