何のために？ / For what?

何のために、この仕事をしているのか？何のためにこの会議をするのか？何のためにこの勉強をしているのか、何のためにこの出張に出かけるのか、何のためにこの研究をするのか、常に何のために、を問うことを忘れると、目的を見失い、情熱を失い、慢性化してしまいます。

For what, am I doing this work? For what purpose do we hold this meeting? For what, I am studying, I am going on this business trip, or I am doing this research. If we forget to ask always for what, we lose sight of purpose, passion and we will become chronic.

特にルーティンワークにはこの問いが欠かせないでしょう。何のためにこのルーティンワークをするのか、この問いによってルーティンワークに心を注入することができます。目的をはっきりと持つこと、それも自分のためのみではなく、社会や世界、今だけでなく未来のためにという目的を持つと、情熱をもって、本気で取り組むことができるのではないでしょうか。

This question is indispensable, especially for routine work. I can input my heart into routine work by asking for what this routing work should be done. Having a purpose, not only for oneself but also for society and the world, not only for the present but also for the future, we can work or act with full passion and devotion.

例えばACRPが取り組む宗教間対話を取り上げてみましょう。何のために対話するかがとても大切なのです。いつも同じメンバーによる対話の場合、特に何のために、が重要なキーワードになります。対話のための対話ではなく、目的を明確にした対話が必要なのです。一例を挙げれば、現在の奴隷制の代表的なものである人身売買をいかにして止めるか、同時に、人身売買の犠牲になった子供たちのリハビリテーションを如何に進めるか、等にテーマを絞った場合、対話は非常に具体的なものになり、参加者の熱も入り、有意義な結果をもたらすものになります。そこでは抽象論のみでなく、必要な人的、財的、物的資源などについても話し合われます。こうして対話は具体的な行動を産み出すのです。

Let’s take up the inter-religious dialogue ACRP is promoting, for example. It is essential for what we do dialogue. In the case of dialogue done by the same member all the time, “for what” is a relevant keyword. Dialogue with clear purpose is needed, not just dialogue for discussion. For example, dialogue focuses upon such themes as how to stop human trafficking which symbolizes modern slavery as well as how to proceed with the rehabilitation of children who were victimized by the trafficking, and dialogue becomes very concrete which makes participants enthusiastic and may end up with a meaningful outcome. In such a dialogue, we discuss not only abstract theory but also necessary human, financial and material resources, etc. In this way, dialogue generates concrete actions.

ACRPでもシンポジウムやセミナーが開かれますが、これらも何のために、が明確でないと、結果は単なる知識や知見の習得に終わってしまい、学びのためだけの集いになる可能性が大きいのです。私たちは、常に何のために新たな知見を得るのか、学ぶのか、そこを問い続け、具体的な行動へとつなげる努力をしています。

ACRP holds symposiums and seminars. However, without the explicit purpose of “for what?”, The results end up merely acquiring information and knowledge. Thus the possibility becomes very high that those gatherings are only for learning. By constantly asking a question as to why we should learn and acquire new knowledge, we are endeavoring to lead ourselves to concrete actions.

例えば新製品を開発するときは、何のために、誰のために、ということがテーマになるのではないでしょうか。本当に必要なものなのか、有益なものなのか、それらが公益に資するものであればあるほど、携わる人の情熱は高まり、心も力も入るでしょう。

For example, when developing a new product, for what and for whom should be the main theme, I think. Whether it is necessary or beneficial? The more they contribute to the public interest, the more passionate the people involved will become, and they will put their mind and power.

飲食業などのお客さま相手の商売であれば、お客さまに喜んでいただくために、ご満足いただくために、というのが一番の目的になります。このように、何のために、を真摯に追求しながら仕事や研究をすることが個人は元より、社会、世の中全体をよりよくしていく原動力になるのではないでしょうか。

For customers’ business such as food and beverage industry, the primary purpose is to make customers happy and satisfied. Doing work and research while pursuing seriously “for what” in this way may become the driving force for the betterment of each human being as well as societies and the world.

宗教間対話・協力のジレンマは、ともすれば参加メンバーが固定化するということです。異なる宗教間の相互理解、信頼を深めるための対話ですから、常に新たなメンバーの参加が必要不可欠であることが見えてきます。更には5年に一度開催される世界大会は、ともすれば素晴らしい大会宣言文の作成と発信が最終目的となりがちです。何のために宣言文を発信するのか、を真摯に追求することによって宣言文の内容は具体的な行動につながる現実性を包摂したものでなければならないことが見えてきます。私たちも不断の努力を行っているところです。

The dilemma of inter-religious dialogue and cooperation is that participating members are more or less same. Since the purpose of dialogue is to deepen mutual understanding and trust among different religions, it becomes clear that the participation of new members shall be sought. Furthermore, the final goal of the world assembly to be held once every five years tends to be creating and announcing a wonderful assembly declaration. By pursuing seriously what a state should be declared, it becomes clear that the contents of the declaration must include the reality that leads to concrete actions. We are ceaselessly making our effort in addressing these issues.

このように、何のために、を日常で問うことがとても大切なことなのです。私は何のために毎日、勤め先に通うのか、なんのために私は仕事をしているのか、今日の会議は何のために行うのか、何のために子育てをするのか、何のために学校に通うのか、何のために研究をするのか、読書をするのか、何のために友達と会うのか、これらは脱マンネリの問いであり、人生をより豊かに充実して生きるためにきっと役立つ問いに違いありません。

In this way, it is critical for us to ask ourselves on a daily basis “for what we do?” For what, I am going to work every day, for what today’s meeting is held, for what to raise children, going to school, to do research, to read books and to meet with friends. These are questions for getting out of a rut and will surely help to live a better and fruitful life.

誰もが安心と安全の中で幸せに暮らせる社会、世界を将来世代に残すために、仕事と研究を続けたい、これが私の今の思いです。

I want to continue my work and research to leave for the future generations the societies and the world where everyone can live happily in safety and security. It is my sincere wish.
