偉大なる少数派 / Great minority

現代世界を眺めてみますと、自分と他者、友と敵、自国と他国、自民族と多民族というように境界線を引いて生きようとする人々と、境界線をなくして同じ地球に住む人間として生きようとする人々の二種類がいるように思います。

There seem to be two kinds of people in the contemporary world. One is a group of people who want to live by drawing a borderline between oneself and others, friends and enemies, our country and other countries, and our ethnic group and other ethnic groups. Another is a group who want to live as the same human beings on the earth by erasing such a borderline.

圧倒的多数派は前者でしょう。後者は少数派で、同じ人間として共に生きる、というような言葉を口に出した途端に、絶対的多数派からは単なる理想主義とみなされ、議論にならない場合が多々あります。現実を見ようとしない単なる夢を語る理想主義者のレッテルを貼られることが多いのです。もちろん、常に理想通りに生きることは至難の技です。しかし、どんなに困難でも境界をなくしていこうとする努力に生きることはとても大切なことだと思うのです。

The overwhelming majority is the former. As the latter is a minority, as soon as they speak words such as living together as the same human beings, there are many cases where discussions cannot start as such words are regarded by people of the absolute majority as just idealism or utopianism. They are often labeled as idealists who only speak about the dream and never try to see the reality. Of course, always living following an ideal is very difficult. However, I think it is critical to living in efforts to erase boundaries, no matter how difficult it is.

以前に消しゴム運動のお話をしました。私が所属するACRPもまさしく様々な境界線を消す消しゴム運動です。本来ホモ・サピエンスとして一つである人類、地球生態系としての一体性、その本来性に戻るための境界線を消すために宗教や哲学、道徳や倫理が存在すると考えます。

I talked about an eraser movement before. The ACRP to which I belong is also one of the eraser movements which try hard to extinguish various boundaries. Religion, philosophy, moral and ethics exist to eliminate such border lines to return to its original nature, namely human beings’ original oneness as Homo sapiens, as well as the oneness of the Earth’s ecosystems.

このような壮大な思想に基づく生き方をする人々は、自己と他者、人類と自然というような確固とした境界線が明瞭に引かれる現実世界においては、永遠に少数派の域を脱することはできないかもしれません。しかし、多数派にはなれなくても少数派の人々が諦めずに本気で消しゴム運動に徹すれば少しずつ不要な、そして往々にして対立の原因となる様々な境界線を消していくことができると思うのです。消した途端に新たな境界線が引かれます。それでもいつか境界線がなくなる日が必ず来ることを信じて本気で消しゴムに徹していくのです。

Those who live their lives based on such grand views may not be able to get out of the minority domain forever in the real world where a solid boundary line between oneself and others, humanity and nature, etc. is drawn. However, even if the minority cannot become the majority, as long as minority people earnestly devote themselves to eraser exercise without giving up, they can gradually erase various boundaries that are unnecessary and often cause conflicts and confrontations, I think. A new boundary line is drawn as soon as it is deleted. However, we genuinely believe that the day when the border disappears will surely come. With this belief, we will seriously devote ourselves to the eraser movement.

どうしたら私たちは消しゴムになれるのでしょうか。家族、隣人、遠くの隣人に接する時、得手でも不得手でも、和顔愛語に努めることだと思います。難しいけれど常に自分に言い聞かせて努力する、そして優しく接する、分け隔てなくです。一言、挨拶するだけで場は柔らかくなることを私たちは日常で経験しています。ほんの少しの勇気を絞り出して笑顔で挨拶する、このささやかな一歩が消しゴムになる最初の一歩であるような気がします。

How can we become erasers? When we contact family members, neighbors, and distant neighbors, we do our best to have smiles and use generous words regardless we are good at it or not. Although it is difficult, we should always tell ourselves, make efforts, and interact with people generously without exception. We experience every day that the air becomes soft by just saying a few greeting words. Greeting with a smile by just squeezing out a little bit of courage is a small step but can be the first step to become an eraser.

多数派にはなれなくとも、私たちは偉大なる少数派になることができます。たしかに私たち一人ひとりは微力です。しかし、無力ではないのです。微力でも力は力です。微力同士が結束すればそれは大きな力になるのです。目の前に立ちはだかる壁の前で決して諦めることなく、微力を結集しながら乗り越えていくのです。

Even though we cannot be the majority, we can become a significant minority. Indeed, each of us has only a small power. However, none of us is powerless. Even if it is a low power, power is power. It will be a high power if the small powers unite together. We will never give up in front of the wall that stands up before us, and we will overcome it while gathering our little skills.

私たちの合言葉は偉大なる少数派です。希望と誇りを持って、境界線の向こうで様々に抑圧、周縁化され、絶望の中で生きざるを得ない友人や家族のところに私たちは勇気を持って、本気で飛び込んでいく必要があると思います。

Our motto is “Great minority.” With hope and pride, we need to jump into friends and families wholeheartedly who are suppressed and marginalized in various ways and have to live in the midst of despair beyond the border.
