夢が目標に変わるとき / When a dream turns into a goal

夢は夢で終わる場合と、目標に変わる場合とがあるのだと思います。夢を持ち続けて努力をするといつしか具体的な目標に変わる、そんな経験をお持ちの方は多いのではないでしょうか。逆に夢を持ち続けても努力を怠ればいつまでも夢は夢であり続ける、そんな経験をお持ちの方も多いかもしれません。

I think there are two cases. One is that a dream ends up with a dream. Another is that an idea transforms into a goal. Many experience a dream changes into a target as long as one continues to endeavor toward realizing one’s dream. On the other hand, many lessons that one’s dream remains a dream if one neglects to make efforts even while keeping one’s dream.

かなり以前にある有名なプロ野球選手が「夢は見るものではなく、実現するものだ」といったことを鮮明に覚えています。ですから彼は単なる夢という言葉はあまり好きではないそうです。 しかし、人生が困難に直面している時、夢を持つことはその困難を乗り切るためのエネルギーになることもあるわけですから一概に夢を持つだけでは意味がないとも言い切れません。

I remember that a famous professional baseball player mentioned long years ago that a dream is not for seeing, but for realizing. He said he didn’t like the word of the dream so much. However, we cannot generally insist that it’s meaningless to only have a dream, as a dream might become energy to overcome the difficulty we face within our lifetime.

夢追い人、という言葉が私は好きです。夢見る人、にとどまらず、夢を追いかける、つまり、夢の実現を目指して真摯に努力する人、というニュアンスがそこにはあるように思うからです。結果として夢が実現する場合もあれば夢で終わる場合もあるでしょう。結果そのものも大切ですが、夢の実現に向けていかなる努力をしたかが、より大切な気がします。

I like the expression of a dream pursuit-er. It’s a person who pursuits one’s dream, not just seeing it. There is a nuance in its appearance that a person is sincerely striving to realize one’s dream. As a result, there are both cases of achieving a dream and ending up with a dream. Of course, the effect itself is essential. But how one endeavor towards realizing a dream seems more important than the result.

一度きりの人生です。同じ顔をして同じ姿で生まれてくることはまずないでしょう。であるならば夢を一生追い続けることはとても大きな意味があると思うのです。みんなが仲良く支え合って生きる社会を築きあげること、これは万人にとって、とても大きな共通の夢です。争いが多発する現実の世界を見れば、ほとんど実現不可能な夢かもしれません。

We have only one time in human life. There is no chance for anyone to reborn into this world with the same face and figure. If that’s the case, it’s significant to pursue a dream in a whole lifetime. Building up a world where everyone lives together in harmony and supports each other is a big and very common dream for all. If we look around the real world which is full of conflicts, it seems almost impossible to realize such a dream.

しかし、その大きな夢、とても大切な、あきらめることのできない夢に向かって努力している人たちが世の中にはたくさんいるのです。争いの道を選ぶ人もいれば、非暴力の道を選ぶ人もいます。友と敵の間の対話の道を探る人もいます。人道支援に命を捧げる人もいれば、より公正な社会システムや法制度の改革等を含む、公共政策作りに人生を捧げる人もいるのです。

However, there are so many people in the world who are striving towards this dream which is so big, important and shall never be given up. Some choose the way of fighting, and others may prefer the approach of non-violence, as well as the method of proving dialogue between friends and enemies. There also are people who devote to humanitarian supports or to public policy making which includes renovation of more just social and judicial systems etc.

人それぞれで夢が目標に変わる瞬間はまちまちでしょう。私自身は夢を追いかけ続けて、目標に変わった瞬間を幾度か経験してきました。実現できた夢もあれば、未だに実現できない夢もあります。いまだに実現できていない夢はともすればもう無理であると、捨ててしまいたい衝動に何度もかられます。

It varies according to each person when one’s dream turns in to a goal. I have had several experiences when my dream transforms into a goal while pursuing. Some dreams have come true, and others have not. I have had lots of experiences of being tempted by strong impulses that I wanted to abandon my unrealized dream as it seems impossible to realize.

死ぬまで夢追い人でありたい、この思いだけは捨てずに大切に持ち続けたい、そう思いながら今日できる努力を続けていきたいと思います。私の一番の夢は安全な未来をこれからの世代に残したいというものです。果てしない夢かもしれません、しかし、命ある限り、追い続けていく覚悟です。

I want to continue doing utmost whatever I can today while keeping genuinely in my mind that I want to be a dream pursuit-er till the moment I pass away. My No1 dream is to leave the safe and secure future for the coming generations. It may be an endless dream. But, I am entirely determined to pursue this dream as long as I live.
