今回は100回目のブログ投稿になります。その記念として、ある日本人の難民支援フィールドワーカーをモデルにした物語をお分けしたいと思います。

This is my 100th posting on this blog.  To mark this occasion, I want to share a story based on the model of a Japanese refugee assistance field worker.

ザグレブに芽生えた絆  Tight knit cultivated in Zagreb

「ちひろ、今日はどこのキャンプに行くの？私もつれてって！」。「駄目よ、お仕事だから連れて行けないの、ジェリカ、ごめんね」。いつもの会話。500メートル程離れた難民キャンプに住むまん丸い目の少女がちひろにまつわりつく。

“Chihiro, which camp are you going? Please take me with you!” “I’m sorry Jerica, I can’t. It’s work.”  This is one of the usual conversations.  A girl with big round eyes, living in a refugee camp about 500 meters away from the office, hangs around Chihiro.

ここはアドリア海に面したクロアチア・リエカの日本NGO事務所。傍らにはクロアチア人のプリシッチ。「このキャンプでは急病人が発生したようです」。地図でキャンプを指しながら報告をする。

It is a Japanese NGO’s office at Rijeka in Croatia, facing the Adriatic Sea. Beside them is Pricic, a Croatian woman. She reports by pointing the map, “It seems a medical crisis emerged in this camp.”

ボスニアでは民族紛争が勃発し、何十万人が身一つで隣国へ難民として流入していた。民族共生のシンボルであったサラエボはまさしく廃墟と化し、多くの高層ビルも崩壊してしまった。

Ethnic conflict broke out in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and hundreds of thousands of refugees crossed into neighboring Croatia, with just clothes they wore. Sarajevo, the symbol of coexistence among multi-ethnicity groups, fell into ruins and many high-rise buildings were collapsed.

キャンプでは二年前に赴任した昌輝が診療を行っている。「はい、胸を出してね」。「ここは痛くないですか？」。「はい、大丈夫。きちんと薬を飲んでくださいね」。穏やかな顔と声で安心を与えながら一人ひとり丁寧に診る。昌輝の薬指にはちひろと揃いの指輪が光る。

In the refugee camps, Masaki has been conducting medical care service since he took his post two years ago. “Please show me your chest,” “Don’t you feel any pain here?”, “OK! Please take medicines.” He examines each patient politely while providing security and peace of mind with his smiling face and calm voice. The matching rings with Chihiro’s on his ring finger glitters.

８月に東京で現地活動報告会が開催されることになった。二人は１ヶ月後、ザグレブ空港に向かう。ちひろには気になる事が三つあった。１ヶ月も現場を離れること、海外で難民救援をしていることを知らない父親に一年振りに会うこと、もう一つの心配が。

The debrief meeting on the field activities was scheduled to be held in Tokyo in August. About a month later, they both headed to Zagreb airport. Chihiro had three things on her chest. First was that she had to be away from the field for one month. The Second was that she would meet her father in a year who didn’t know she engaged in refugee assistance activities abroad. Moreover, she had one more thing to worry.

昌輝は日本の夏祭りのニュースに笑顔で饒舌になっていた。「プリ、大丈夫！すぐ帰ってくるからね！」。そうちひろは言って二人はゲートへと向かった。プリシッチは不安気に彼らの姿が見えなくなるまで手を振り続けた。

Masaki jawed with a smile about the news of the Japanese summer festival. “Pri, we will be back soon. Don’t worry!” said Chihiro and they headed to the boarding gate. Pricic kept waving them out of sight with a touch of anxiety.

不安の発芽  Budding of anxiety

我が家で父と妹との再会を果たすちひろ。３人揃って母の遺影に手を合わす。顔を紅潮させた明。「ちひろ、仕事は順調か？もう少し顔を見せてくれないとお父さん、心配で夜も眠れない時がある」。

Chihiro met her father and younger sister at home in Japan. They joined their hands in prayer before the portrait of the deceased mother. Akira brushed and said, “Chihiro, is your work going well?  Sometimes, I can’t sleep well for worrying about you as you seldom drop in.”

「うん、でも、お姉ちゃんも仕事忙しいから、なかなか帰って来れないわよね」。えりかがちひろの顔を覗き込むようにして呟く。

Erika looked into Chihiro’s face and murmured, “hmmm, but you, sis cannot come back so often as you are busy at your work, right?”

妹と二人暮らし、年老いて幾分気弱になっている父を身近で感じながらちひろはふと思った。（５年間も父親に嘘を突き通し、これからも嘘をつくことなんてできないと）。両手の指をテーブルの上でからませながら一語一語力を込めて語り始めた。「実は何年も前から海外の難民支援現場で働いているの…、申し訳ないけれどこれからの人生もそうしていくつもりです」。

Also, then, an idea hit upon Chihiro with her feeling that her father was getting weak with his age while living together with her sister, “I cannot keep lying my dad from now on as I have been doing so for last five years.” She began talking to him in a way emphasizing word by word while lacing her fingers together on the table. “To tell you the truth, I have been working abroad many years for assisting refugees. I am very sorry, but I will continue my work from now on, too.”

明は突然の告白に驚き、激高して「出て行け！」と怒鳴ってしまう。えりかがとりなそうとするが彼女はそのまま部屋を飛び出し、ホテルにいる昌輝の元へ駆けつける。

Akira was very upset, enraged and shouted out, “Go out!” Erika tried to mediate them, but Chihiro went straight out of the room and run into the hotel room where Masaki was.

ちひろは思いをぶつける。「私、これからも、ずーっと行き場のない彼らと一緒に生きたいの！あなたはどう思う？」。「君には家族がいて帰る場所があるから。僕は孤児、帰る場所がない。君と一緒に日本で暮らしたい…」。昌輝のかすれる声。長い沈黙…。

Chihiro hit her feeling at him, “I want to live with those who have nowhere to go! How do you think?” “You have family and a place to come back. I am an orphan and no place to go back. I want to live with you here in Japan…” said Masaki in a loud whisper.　There followed a long silence.

涙がちひろの頬を滴り落ちる。「ごめんなさい」。震える声でそれだけ言うとちひろは立ち上がり、ドアに向かい、振り向きもせずに部屋を背にするのが精いっぱいだった。

Tears were rolling down Chihiro’s cheek. “I’m sorry!” said Chihiro in a low trembling voice, stood up and headed to the door without looking back and went out of the room. It was the best she could do.

希望に膨らむ蕾  Swelling of buds with hope

一方、実家では明とえりかが気を取り直して、いつもの二人だけの静かな話し合いを始めていた。「こんな時間に一体ちひろはどこに行ってしまったんだろう」。明は心配そうにえりかをみつめる。そしてあきらめ顔で独り言のようにつぶやいた。「娘の生き方を親が変えることなんてできないよな。母さんがいたらちひろになんて言うのかなぁ」。

On the other hand, Akira and Erika pulled themselves together at the family home and started the usual, quiet conversation between the two. “Where has she gone this late at night? Akira looked at Erika with worry. Akira murmured aloud with a resigned shrug, “Parent cannot change daughter’s way of living, can I?  If mom was alive, what would she say to Chihiro, I wonder. “

明にお茶を注ぎ頷きながら話しかけるえりか。「お父さんがお姉ちゃんを心配する気持ちは痛いほど分かるわ。海外のそれも難民キャンプだなんて、危険がいっぱいなところ。可愛い娘の身を案じない親なんてどこにもいないものね。そうね、お母さんだったらきっと私たちにできることは何事もないように祈ることだけね、って言うんじゃない？」。「ふー」。明は、天井を仰いだ。

While pouring tea into his cup, Erika was talking to him, “I fully understand dad’s worry about my sis. Refugee camps abroad is full of dangers. There are no parents who don’t worry about their beloved daughter. Well, I guess our mom may say y what we can do for her is to pray that everything goes smoothly, right?” “Hmm,” Akira gazed at the heaven.

「ただいま！」。白々と夜が明ける頃、ちひろが戻ってきた。「二人とも、まだ起きていたの？」。明とえりかの顔がぱっと明るくなる。「さっきは怒鳴って悪かった」。「私こそ、飛び出しちゃってごめんね。心配かけてごめんなさい」。えりかが二人にそっとお茶を出す。

“I’m home!” When the dawn broke, Chihiro came back home. “Are you both still staying awake?” Akira and Erika lighted up. “I am sorry that I shouted angrily before.” “Not more so than I that I jumped out the home. I am so sorry to worry you about me.”  Erika served tea to them.

長い一日になった。「彼のために自分が本当に選択すべきことは？」。どうしても眠れない。何度も寝返りをしながらちひろは考え続けた。

It became a long day. “What should I truly choose him?” She cannot sleep. She kept thinking about it while turning over in bed many times.

太陽の香り Flavor of the Sun

ちひろと一緒に日本で暮らしたいと告白した昌輝の顔が窓辺で街路樹を見つめるちひろの脳裏を駆け巡る。ちひろの右の握り拳が椅子のひじ掛けをたたいた。「結婚相手を彼に紹介しよう！今の私がすべきこと。それしかない」。「真理子しかいない。彼女なら昌輝を幸せにしてくれるに違いない！」。ちひろは椅子から立ち上がり、早速携帯電話を手にとった。

The face of Masaki who confessed the wish of living together with Chihiro in Japan came back to haunt Chihiro, watching the street trees by the windowsill. Her fisted right hand hit the armrest. “I shall introduce someone to Masaki. It is what I should do now, nothing else.” “No person other than Mariko. I’m sure she will bring Masaki happiness.” Chihiro slowly stood up from the chair and picked up the mob.

二日後、真理子に会いに行く。彼への思いを断ち切ろうとしてハンカチをくしゃくしゃに握りしめながら歩くちひろ。待ち合わせの喫茶店のドアの前。不安がよぎる。「彼、こんな自分の行動を迷惑に思わないかしら？」。「いくら親友でも真理子は理解してくれるかしら」。ちひろは両手で必死に胸を抑える。鈴のついた古風な木製ドアを開けた。

Two days later she went to meet Mariko. She walked the way, squeezing her handkerchief with the determination of cutting off her love to him. In front of the door of café rendezvous, anxiety crossed her mind. “I wonder if he feels my action is troublesome?” “Will Mariko understand this proposal, even though she is one of my close friends?” Chihiro held her breast firmly and opened the ancient wooden door with a bell.

それぞれの道を生きる決断をした二人。ちひろは一人で帰る旅支度に入る。「本当にいいの？後悔しない？」。「私も彼もこれでよかったんだよね！」。スーツケースを見つめながら繰り返し自問した。

They both made up their minds to go their separate ways. Chihiro started preparing for her return travel by herself. “Am I OK? Never regret?” “Wasn’t it the best decision for both him and me?” She repeatedly asked herself while looking at her suitcase.

昌輝も苦悩して何度も涙した。「一緒に戻ればちひろにも回りにもかえって迷惑をかける…。日本で生きる道を見つけよう！」。苦悩の末にそう決断したとき、久々にスッキリした顔が正輝に戻っていた。

Masaki tore many times in his agony. “If I go back with Chihiro, I will cause Chihiro trouble. I shall find out the way of living in Japan!”  When he made up his mind after a tough call, a clear face returned to him.

空港まで見送りにきた明とえりかに「ありがとう。そして昌輝のことをよろしくお願いします」。深々と頭を下げてちひろはザグレブに向けて旅立った。

Chihiro asked Akira and Erika at the airport where they came to see her off, “Thank you! Please take good care of Masaki.” She took off for Zagreb after deeply lowered her head.

アドリアのオリーブ  Olive of the Adriatic

ザグレブ空港でちひろを迎えるプリシッチ。「おかえりなさい！」。ちひろと満面の笑みでハグをする。背中を優しく撫でるちひろ。「とても長かったですよ。この１ヶ月。お待ちしていました！」

At the Zagreb airport, Plicic welcomed Chihiro, “Welcome home!” She hugged Chihiro with a big smile.　Chihiro gentled on her back. “It’s been long. I have been waiting for you!”

事務所に着いた途端にジェリカが飛びついてきた。「ちひろ、私、会いたかった。おばあちゃんと二人きりでとってもさみしかった。もうどこにも行かないで！」「昌輝は？昌輝はどこ？」ジェリカの目がみるみる間に真っ赤になった。

When they arrived at the office, Jerika jumped at Chihiro. “I missed you, Chihiro. I felt lonely with just my gramma. Please don’t go anywhere!” “What happened to Masaki? Where is Masaki?” Jerika’s eyes became red in a moment.

「私、いつか昌輝の代わりになってちひろと働きたい！ちひろ、私、お父さんもお母さんもいないし、なれるわけないよね？」ちひろは彼女をそっと抱き寄せた。

“One day, I want to work in Masaki’s place! However, I cannot become his replacement without parents, right?” Chihiro softly took her in her arms.

三年後、昌輝から婚約をしたとの便りがちひろに届く。ちひろはその甘酸っぱい手紙を何度も読み返した。

Three years later Chihiro heard a sound out of Masaki, saying he got engaged with Mariko. She read this sweet-sour letter many times.

えりかが昌輝たちを訪ねる。 「次の方、どうぞ」。昌輝は被災された方たちが列を作る診療所で生き生きと実に楽しそうに働いていた。傍らには笑顔で寄り添う真理子がいた。

Erika visited Masaki’s. “Next in line, please!” Masaki’s were working very pleasantly and vividly at their clinic where affected people were lining up outside the door. Being by his side was Mariko with a smile.

あれからだいぶ月日が経った。今日もちひろはプリシッチが運転する車で、戦争とは無縁の美しいアドリア海に面した難民キャンプに出かけて行く。その傍らには奨学金をもらって医学生になったジェリカが座っている。キャンプを取り巻く畑ではオリーブの葉がアドリアの海風にはためいてキラキラと輝いていた。

A long time goes by since that time. Today, Chihiro is going out to the refugee camps facing the beautiful Adriatic Sea, which is free from war. Besides Chihiro, sitting is Jerika who is now a medical student on a scholarship. The olive leaves in the fields surrounding camps were glittering in the onshore breeze of the Adriatic Sea.

人生は予測のつかない出来事の連続ですが、いつも助けを必要とする人々を太陽のように照らし、温かく見守り、寄り添う生き方を貫くことの大切さをこの物語は語ってくれています。今でもこの物語の主人公は助けを必要とする人々と共に生きています。

As life is full of unpredictable events, this story tells the importance of holding on to the way of living, in which we always try to watch people in need of help gently like the sun shines on them, as well as always try to be by their side. The heroine of this story is still living together with people needing assistance or care.
