宇宙的にもの考え、地球的に行動する / Think universally, act globally

「地球的にもの考え、ローカル的に行動する」という言葉がよく使われます。確かに重要なメッセージだと思います。しかし、現代社会においてはそれでも視野の広さは十分ではないような気がするのです。宇宙に存在する無数の星の中の一つである地球という観点に立てば、太陽と月と水と緑の惑星である地球の特異性、特殊性が浮き彫りになり、その存在の奇跡性を深く理解することができ、人類が自ら奇跡の星の生態系で生まれ育つ生命体の一員としての取るべき行動を深く自覚することができると思うからです。

The word “think globally, act locally” is often used. I think it is certainly a fundamental message. However, in our modern society, its horizon seems not wide enough. From the viewpoint of the Earth, which is one of the myriads of stars in the universe, the singularity and peculiarity of the Earth, the planet of sun, moon, water and green stand out in clear relief, and we can deeply understand the miraculous nature of its existence. With this understanding, we human beings become fully aware of actions that should be taken as a member of entire life form which is born and raised in the ecosystem of this miraculous star, I think.

つまり、より大きな視野で生きることができるようになるのです。私たちはたった一つの奇跡の惑星である地球という家に住む家族であるという意識を持ちやすくなります。それは単なる意識の問題ではなく、宇宙的な事実でもあります。そして家族であるならば、各人の相違を受容し、持てるものを分かち合い、支え合いながら、平和に仲良く暮らしていくのが最も自然な生き方でしょう。家族同士が傷つけ合い、殺し合うことがいかに愚かなことであるのかに直に気付いていくことができるでしょう。

It means that we can live our life with the wider horizon. It will help us have consciousness of being family members who live in the house of the earth which is only one mysterious planet. It’s not only the matter of consciousness but the very fact of the universe. If we all are family members, the most natural way of living exists in our life that we accept a difference of each, share whatever we have, support each other and live together in peace. We will soon become fully aware of the stupidity that family members hurt and kill each other.

家族ではなく、他人であると思うから、そこに敵と味方の隔たりが生ずる危険性が存在するのです。私たちが地球という家の家族であるという意識を深めることができれば隔たりは縮まり、同じ家族としての生き方に立ち返ることができるでしょう。元々私たちはホモサピエンスという同じ種の家族なのですから。

As we see people not as family but as anyone else or stranger, there exists a danger of arising a border between enemy and friend. If we could deepen our consciousness of family membership in the house of the earth, the border will shrink, and we will be able to return to a way of living as the same human family, as we are the original family of the Homo-sapience species.

人種、民族、言語、宗教、文化、信条などの違いは、地球家族という事実から見れば実に些細な違いなのです。一方で、それらの相違を何十万年の長い歴史の中で培われてきた多様性とみれば、それはとても豊かな財産なのです。

The differences among human races, ethnicity, languages, religions, cultures or ideologies, etc. are the very trifle ones from the viewpoint of the Global Family. On the other hand, if we look at these differences as diversities which have been cultivated in the long history of hundreds of thousands of years, they are the wealthy assets.

宇宙的に物事を考え、地球的に行動する、という意識に立つだけでも、私たち一人一人の考え方、生き方には相当の変容が起こるのではないでしょうか。地球的な行動とは、例えば日本人である私がエチオピア人を、パレスチナ人を、ブラジル人を隣に住む家族とみる、隣人とみて声をかける、手を差し伸べることに他ならないのです。一日一回はこのメッセージを心の中で唱えて、出会う人それぞれを家族として優しく見つめる訓練を自分に課していきたいと思います。

Even if we only stand on the viewpoint of “Think universally, act globally,” a considerable amount of transformation may occur in the way of thinking and living of each of us. Global action means, for example, we Japanese see Ethiopian, Palestinian and Brazilian as family members who live next to our house and talk to and give helping hands to them as our neighbors. I want to train myself to take a free look at everyone whom I meet as my family by telling myself this message in my mind at least once a day.

私の日常に置き換えれば、たとえ実際に声はかけなくても、手は差し伸べなくても、職場の同僚、学校の友人、電車やバスで乗り合わせた人を、心の中で私の家族として優しく見つめることだと思うのです。至難の業かもしれませんが、優しく見つめることは毎日の訓練次第で全く不可能なことではありません。

If I think of my daily life, I think it is to look at people who are my fellow workers at the same office, friends at schools, people boarding on the same bus or train, generously as my family in my heart and mind, even though I don’t talk to nor give hands to in reality. It may be challenging, but it’s not impossible to look at people generously and tenderly as long as I train myself in so doing every day.
