競争と協力 / competition and cooperation

今の世の中はすべての領域で競争が蔓延しているとも言えます。学業、研究、ビジネス、スポーツ、文化、芸術、すべての分野で競争があるから確かに発展もあるのでしょう。しかし、競争が過度になると、そこには勝利至上主義、勝利のためにはあらゆる手段を駆使しても構わないという、行き過ぎた考えや危険な行動が生じます。

In the present world, it can be said that competition is prevailing in all areas. Academics, researches, business, sports, culture, and arts, etc. could be developed through competition. However, if the match exceeds too far, extreme thoughts or evil deeds might be generated which justify using all means for winning, namely the victory supremacy.

最近、日本ではこの勝利至上主義の負の象徴的な事件がスポーツの世界で発生しました。勝つために故意に相手側の選手を傷つけるというスポーツのフェアプレー精神を傷つけた信じられない暴力行為です。

Recently, one incident occurred in the sports area in Japan, which is very symbolic of victory supremacy. It was an incredibly violent play damaged the spirit of the fair game, hurting an opponent player on purpose for winning the match.

その根本的原因は勝利至上主義にあるのではないかと思うのです。勝利することにより、人々から高い評価を得て何らかの利益を被る、例えば学校なら志望者を増やせる、企業なら商品が売れる、国なら国家意識が高まる等です。

I think the ultimate cause exists in victory supremacy. The winning match will gain some benefits by acquiring high evaluation from people, for example, schools get more applicants of students, companies increase sales of products and nations enhance nationalism, etc.

一方で競争は成長や発展には欠かせないものでしょう。競争がなかったならば成長や発展は停滞するかもしれません。重要なのは程度だと思うのです。過度の競争は緊張と対立を生じさせ、協調に基づく共生を阻害します。つまり、許容範囲内の競争と協調のバランスを図ることが大事なのではないでしょうか。

On the other hand, competition is indispensable for the growth and development of everything. Any growth or development may be stagnant without competition. Cruciality exists in degree or extent of competition. An excessive competition will generate tension and conflict, as well as impede coexistence based on cooperation. Keeping a proper balance between competition and collaboration is crucial.

いずれにしても現在世界は競争の激化により共生が阻害されている事実は否めないのです。競争から協調への移行、こうしたテーマを真剣に探求していかないと世界はますます分断の方向へ進んでしまうのではないかと恐れます。勝利至上主義に走ることの危険さを今回の事件は教えてくれているように思っています。競争から協力へ、というテーマを真剣に見つめていきたいと思います。

At any rate, no one can deny the fact that intensification of competition is impeding ordinary living of humanity in the present world. I am afraid that our society will go forward in the direction of division unless we seriously pursue the theme of ” Shift from Competition to Cooperation.”　The incident teaches us the danger and risk of victory supremacy. I want to pursue this theme seriously.
