継続は力なり、という言葉があります。現在、私は所属教団である立正佼成会の仕事でエチオピア、ティグレ州のメケレに来ています。
There’s a word of ”continuation is power.” I am now in Mekelle of Tigray province, Ethiopia with my work for Rissho Kosei-kai.
1993年より、貧困撲滅のミッションを掲げて設立されたティグレ州のローカルNGOであるティグレ救援協会との合同で州のいくつかの村で植林プロジェクトを実施してきています。今年で26年目になります。
We have been implementing forestation projects in some regions in the province jointly with our Ethiopian counterpart ”Relief Society of Tigray” which is a local NGO, founded in 1993 with its mission for the eradication of poverty. It has passed 23 years since we started this project,
この間、会員ボランティア隊の派遣や、調査モニターの派遣も行ってきました。今回は10年ぶりの調査モニター隊の派遣です。私自身は21年振りの訪問になりました。
For the past 26 years, we have been dispatching member volunteers and monitoring teams to Tigray. This monitoring team was dispatched after 10years since the last one. Twenty-three years have passed since my last visit.
これらのプロジェクト活動に関わる費用はすべて一食を捧げる運動によって生み出された会員の浄財で賄われています。
All the costs for this project are covered by the contributions from the members who donate the money through ”Donate a meal” campaign.
月に何度か食事を抜き、空腹感を味わい、その分を献金し、飢えで亡くなる人がいなくなるように祈りを捧げる運動です。
It’s a movement in which we members donate money by skipping a meal several times a month, experiencing a bit of hunger, and offering a sincere prayer that anyone will not starve to death.
毎年、多額の浄財が世界のさまざまなプロジェクトに使用されています。一人一人の献金額は少ないのですが、大勢で取り組むことにより、塵も積もれば山となる、の言葉通り、大きな額になります。そして祈りのパワーも結集するのです。
Every year, a great amount of money is spent on various projects. Even though the individual contribution is small, it becomes a big amount if many people do together, as the greatest outcome will bring about by the accumulation of the small effort.
ティグレ州では過去10年間で絶対的貧困層の割合は6割から3割に減少したそうです。現地の人々が現地の人々のためにさまざまな自立に向けたプロジェクトを実施しているのです。
It is reported that the proportion of the people who live under the absolute poverty line has been reduced from 60 to 30 percent for the last 10 years in the Tigray province. The local people are implementing various self-sufficient projects for the local people.
食料安全保障、生計向上、農業植林、環境保全、雇用促進などを通した貧困撲滅運動です。
It’s a movement for eradicating poverty through food-security, enhancement of livelihood, agroforestry, environmental preservation, and promotion of employment, etc.
私たちは過去23年間、彼らのそうした活動の一部に加わることができてとても嬉しく思っています。私たちを快く受け入れてくださってきた彼らに心から感謝します。
We are truly happy that we are part of their such activities over the last 23 years. We are very grateful to them for having been accepting us wholeheartedly.
今回、21年振りに現地を訪問し、着実に成果が上がっていることをつぶさに見聞し、感動を覚えています。フィールド訪問はあと2日続きますがチームとしての報告書をまとめ、今後の方向性を決めていくことになります。
I am touched to see the steady progress and development at the places I am visiting with 23 years interval. We have two more days for a field visit. After making a monitoring team’s report, we will decide the future direction of this project.
現地でつくづくと思うこと、それは「継続は力なり」という言葉です。もう少し詳しく言いますと、「真摯な継続は絶対的な信頼を生む」ということです。
I deeply look into the word of ”continuation is power.” on the spot. To put it more in detail, it means” the sincere continuation will generate absolute trust.”
同じミッションに向かい、志しを分かち合いながら協働を継続する、そのことによって培われた友情、信頼と絆は何ものにも代えがたい強固なものになるのです。
Continuing the joint action through sharing the same commitment toward the common mission, fosters and cultivates strong and firm friendship, trust, and the bond which are irreplaceable by any other.
世代交代で、現地の受け入れスタッフとは全員が今回初対面でした。しかし、挨拶を交わす間もなく、そこには長年の友としての関係が現れたのです。
It was the first meeting with each other due to the generation-change. However, a long-year friendship instantly emerges without time for greeting.
「継続は信頼と絆を生む」このことを肝に命じて今後の人生を歩んでいくことを現地で決意しつつあります。
”Continuation gives birth to trust and bond.” I am making up my mind here that I will walk on the road of my life, always bearing in my mind this word.
