青年の力 / Power of Youth

いつの時代にも世の中を大きく変え、動かしたのは青年たちではなかったでしょうか。例を挙げれば枚挙がありません。青年期に自分の限界を顧みずにいろいろなことに挑戦することはその後の人生に大きな影響を与えるのみならず、社会や世界にも影響を及ぼすのです。

Throughout any era, it was young people who changed and moved the world. So many examples exist in the history of the world. Challenging various things while going beyond one’s limit in adolescence will not only significantly influence one’s life afterward but will also affect societies and the entire world.

自分自身を振り返ってみても20代から30代は世界中を駆け回っていました。それもほとんどが民族紛争地域でした。クルド難民支援ではイラン・イラク・トルコ三国の国境近くのイランのウルミエ、ソマリア避難民支援ではソマリランドのハルゲイサ、ジブチのアリサビエ、旧ユーゴスラビア難民・国内避難民支援ではクロアチアのリエカ、オシエク、クロアチアとセルビアの激戦区ブコバル、ボスニア・ヘルツェゴビナの激戦区サラエボ、ゴラジュデ、シポボ、アフガニスタンの帰還民支援ではカブール、カンダハル等です。

When I look back on my life, I was running across the world in my 20s – 30s. Most of the places I worked were in the ethnically conflicted areas. Those areas included the followings:

Ulmier of Iran near the border of Iran, Iraq, and Turkey in support of Kurdish refugees. Also Hargeisa of Somaliland in support of Somali Internally Displaced people, and Ali Sabieh of Djibouti for Somali refugees. Rijeka and Osijek of Croatia, Vukovar, the severe battlefield between Croatia and Serbia, Sarajevo, Gorazde and Sipovo of Bosnia and Herzegovina in support of refugees and internally displaced people in the former Yugoslavia. Kabul and Kandahar of Afghanistan in support of Afghan returnees and so on.

もちろん、人よりも臆病な私にとって、紛争地域に行く怖さは相当あったはずなのですが、それ以上に犠牲者たちの支援を行わなければならないという使命感、責任感のほうが強かったために、休むことなく戦争で分断された現場で働いていたのだと思います。今、振り返ってみますと、まさしく無我夢中で難民や避難民等の支援活動に明け暮れた青年時代でした。

Of course, I, a sort of coward person, must have a considerable sense of fear of going to the conflict areas, but I continued to work in the war-torn regions with my understanding of mission and responsibility of having to support the victims, which were far stronger than my sense of fear, I believe. When I retrospect in this way, I realize that I wholeheartedly devoted to supporting refugees when I was in my young age.

青年の特性は、理想や夢に向かって全力投球ができることです。結果を顧みずに挑戦できる、全力を尽くす、最大の努力を惜しまない、ということではないでしょうか。宗教においても、社会活動、平和活動においても主役は汗をかいて現場を走りぬく青年たちなのです。国際NGOの現場においても中枢を担う人材は30代が中心と言ってもよいでしょう。

The characteristic of a young adult is that one can give the fullest power to ideal and dream. Doesn’t it mean that one can challenge, do utmost as well as do one’s best not to spare one’s most significant effort without worrying so much about the results? In the realms of religion, social and peace activities, young people are major players who could run across the front lines with lots of sweats. Even in the field of international NGOs, it can be said that the thirties are the primary human resources in the central area of activities.

私も30代の頃、よくWCRPとRKKの創設者である庭野日敬師から、「青年たちよ、自分たちが社会、世界に貢献できるうちに、身を惜しまずに、精いっぱい貢献しなさい。それが青年の使命なんだよ」という言葉を頂きました。世界をよりよくするのも、より悪くするのも、特に青年の志にかかっていると言っても過言ではないと思うのです。

When I was in my thirties, I often heard the words of Rev. Nikkyo Niwano, who is a founder of Religions for Peace and Rissho Kosei-kai, saying, “You, young leaders! Please make contributions whatever you can without sparing anything you have, while time allows you to do for societies and the world. It is a mission of you, young people.” I think it is not an overstatement to say that it depends on the will of young people whether we can make our world better or worse.

青年には無限の情熱と無限の力があるのです。世界を、そして私たちの共通の未来を変える力を持っているのです。本気の青年が一人一人増えていったとき、この世界から戦いがなくなり、みんなが仲良く支え合い助け合いながら平和に暮らせるときが必ず来るはずです。その第一歩は一人から始まる、そう私たちの先達は異口同音に教えてくれています。一歩一歩、情熱を持って進んでいきましょう。私は身体的には青年ではありませんが青年のような情熱を最後まで持ち続けて生きていきたい、と心底から思っています。

Young people have immense passion and power. You possess the ability to change the world and our collective future. When a young person with genuine love and determination increases one by one, the time when any war or conflict disappears and all peoples can support, help each other and live in peaceful coexistence will surely come. The first step towards this goal starts with one person, so tell our pioneers. Let us go forward step by step, with passion. I am not physically a young man, but I want to keep living on till the end, never losing passion like a young person, from the very bottom of my heart.
